Help out NWAC and have fun doing it.

You use their forecasts. They save your life. At least they help you have fun. Now it's time to help them out. The Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center is having a music and drink fundraiser Thursday, February 28 at Velo Cult in Portland. It's 21+, so the drinks can be real (sorry youngsters, get older quick). Tickets are $25 at the door and $20 plus fees at Brown Paper Tickets. Come sing, dance, laugh and support the future of our weather forecasting.

Bring your short board and your A-game for the tight banks. Also, if you have any inclination to splitboard, the Splitboard Race at the Derby is the funnest race to watch in all of racing. You can't even imagine it without being there. Thinking about it doesn't do it justice. They have a board demo going on Saturday, too, so you have extra reason to get out there and something to pass the time while you're waiting for your run if you don't want to mess up you precious race wax job. Because I know you're serious like that. Personally, I'll be lucky to even register on-time. I'll see you there anyway.

5th Annual Dirksen Derby Dec. 17-19

Here's what you need to know-

This is not a tightly regimented event, so details are still in flux.

The GOLDEN rule: All proceeds from everything go to Tyler Eklund, a friend and rad kid who was paralyzed while snowboarding. Paralyzed. Think about that when you reach for your wallet.



Dirksen Derby Kickoff Party: Friday, December 16th. Doors @ 7pm, Band at 8. Location: the Poet House in downtown Bend. All ages. Music, Drinks for 21+, Raffle, and “Broken Board” art auction.  All proceeds go to Tyler.

Racing: The whole weekend! Depending on weather, snow fall and poor planning, the schedule of the event will remain flexible. All participants are expected to be on-hill both Saturday and Sunday ready to either race the course, cheer on their fellow competitors, bash some windlips or stuff their faces with Parilla clam chowder. If everything goes perfectly as planned, Friday the course will be open for timed practice, Saturday we will hold both the Mens qualifier and the Splitboard race, and then Sunday will be everything else (the top Mens qualifiers from Saturday, Derby Elites, Womens, Older and Wiser, Groms and Sit-ski). But remember, the actual schedule can change quickly!

Registration: $25 per racer, per event. All proceeds go to Tyler. Racers can register online at MtBachelor.com or at Mt. Bachelor`s West Village lodge on Friday afternoon, Saturday morning (8:00-10:00) or Sunday morning (8:00-10:00). There will NOT be a limit to the amount of competitors allowed in the event. Discounted lift tickets will be available at registration.

Shred-tober?

I can see Rock-tober, Jock-tober, Shock-tober, Cock-tober and even Manitowoc-tober; but Shred-tober doesn't so much roll off the tongue as it stutters and gets spit out. Shred video double features are fun, though, whatever you call them. Sporting goods mega-store US Outdoor is teaming with K2 for three nights of action for a quality cause. That cause is Portland ripper Kevin Nimick's battle against cancer. All shows are $2 and at Portland's Clinton Street Theater. Here's the rest:

Snowdays Golf Days

Any golfers out there? Snowdays needs YOU to compete for wonderful prizes at the Inaugural Golf Days Tournament. The tournament is Friday, August 26th at Colwood National Golf Course in Portland. Registration is at 1:00, shotgun start at 2:00. Some of the prizes available are Timberline lift tickets, a $100 Jimmy Mak's gift certificate, a Nike golf bag and shoe carrier, eight (yes, 8, Bob) rounds of golf at Colwood, Portland Timbers tickets, gift packages from RVCA, Bonfire and Skullcandy and a 3-burner gas grill.

Entry is a $75 charity write-off per golfer and covers your cart, your first drink ticket (more available thanks to Heineken), a raffle ticket and a bag of goodies from our sponsors. If you have three friends, sign up together to guarantee your foursome. Mulligan tickets will be for sale and we have some other surprises for you from our hole sponsors. Don't golf but still want to give something back to the local snowboarding community? Show up at 6:30 with $25 for the kids and we'll treat you to a BBQ dinner. Press P-Tex for Peace

I'm not much of a jibber, but that only means less competition for the rest of you this weekend. Up at Meadows the Wham Bam Charity Jam (seriously people, is it that hard to think up an original name for an event?) is set to go off on Friday and Saturday. The AM event (as in amateur, not morning) is on Friday (as good a reason as any to skip school) with the top three finishers from a 15 and younger and a 16 and older division getting to compete against Marc Frank Montoya and the pros on Saturday for cash and prizes. Proceeds go to help Invisible Children Inc. a charity dedicated to peace in northern Uganda. Let me guess, you didn't know there was a war going on in northern Uganda. Neither did I. As of the info on their site, it's been going on for 23 years. If you're a jib star and want to help out some people who truly need it, this is your chance. If you just want to know more about Africa's longest running war and help out without fear of reconstructive surgery, check out this page for screenings of their movie near you. If you just want to see some live action on the man-rails show up at Meadows Friday and Saturday. Josh King and the park crew will set it up and MFM and the pro crew are sure to tear it down.
